Fraud & Scam Policy
How Roov detects fraud, what happens to bad actors, and what protects you as a user.
This page is a working draft — the substance is what the product does today, but the final wording is pending review. Contact support@roov.africa if anything here contradicts what you were told in-app.
Roov's stance
Nigerian rental fraud is the reason Roov exists. Roov actively works to detect and remove bad actors, and to protect users who follow platform rules.
The single most important rule: pay through Roov. In-app payments are covered by Roov's dispute-resolution process. Off-platform cash or transfer payments are not.
Fraud patterns Roov watches for
Listings with stock photos or photos of a different property.
Listers who don't have the right to rent out the property they're advertising.
Managers pressuring tenants to pay outside Roov (bank transfer to a personal account, cash to "skip the fee", etc.).
Tenants creating multiple accounts to circumvent bans or file duplicate reports.
Anyone impersonating Roov staff — Roov will never DM you from a personal phone or a non-roov.africa email asking for money or credentials.
User protection
Payments through Roov: Roov's dispute-resolution process applies. Refunds are possible per the Refund Policy.
Off-platform payments: not covered. Roov cannot recover funds sent by direct bank transfer, cash, or other apps.
This is why the safety notice appears in every marketplace chat.
Reporting fraud
If a listing or user looks fraudulent, report it immediately — see the Reporting & Trust Policy for the specific steps. Reports are reviewed within 24 hours.
If you've already lost money to a scam, email trust@roov.africa with all details (Paystack references if in-app; screenshots of any off-platform transfers). Roov cannot guarantee recovery of off-platform funds but works with affected users on next steps.
Enforcement
Confirmed fraud is grounds for permanent account termination, listing takedown, and — where a crime has been committed — referral to Nigerian law enforcement.
Roov may share account information with law enforcement when legally required or when protecting user safety.
